The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is taking additional precautionary measures across the institution to protect patients and staff amid COVID-19 outbreak.
We are committed to the welfare of all those we serve and the following measures have been undertaken.
- Entrance and visitation: Only three entrances/exits will be available to the public (Casualty, Labour Ward and ICU-A). Upon entering, all person’s temperature will be taken by a security personnel to determine their status. Patients are only allowed one (1) visitor per day, from 11am to 12 noon.
- Calling in: If you think you have been exposed and have symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing), we stand ready to serve you. However, help us prepare for your visit by calling ahead before coming to the Emergency Room. We are also in the process of implementing our telemedicine system, whereby, doctor’s visits can be done via video or phone.

- Clinical Services: Clinics have been reduced to 50 percent and patients will be further informed as we go forward.
- Elective surgeries: All elective surgeries have been placed on hold until further notice.
- Students should remain home: All medical students should remain at home until further directives have been given by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW).
As a healthcare provider, our priority is serving our staff, patients and community. Therefore, these precautions have been taken to ensure we can continue caring for our patients while also protecting the health of our staff. We further encourage everyone to practice regular infection prevention techniques such as washing their hands frequently, avoiding touching their faces, cough etiquette and staying home when they are sick.
