Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Medical Social Worker (HPC/MSW 1) in the Medical Social Work Department at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the general direction of the Head- Medical Social Work Department the individual will:

  • Assess the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment and communicates these to other members of the health team.
  • Assess patients and incorporate therapeutic case work or group therapy to solve problems that may be causing anxiety, strain or others which may delay response to medical treatment.
  • Coordinates and participate with inter-disciplinary team members in developing and implementing programmes to improve the psychosocial well-being of clients.
  • Helps patient to accept and adjust to illness and disability.
  • Provides counselling and makes referrals to appropriate agencies providing social, educational, financial or rehabilitative services.
  • Helps patients and their family to use community resources; assist with registration in appropriate agencies, recommends activities which facilitates the necessary social interaction and which provide the necessary therapy.
  • Ensures that adequate records are kept and reports done to facilitate continuity of care.
  • Maintaining accurate records, preparing reports and participating in all training, supervision and HIV response meetings.
  • Support the objectives of the Centre for HIV/AIDS Research, Education and Services (CHARES) programme which is to increase the number of patients attaining and maintaining viral suppression.
  • Organize and facilitate support groups to address adherence issues.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BSc. in Social Work from an accredited institution
  • Three (3) years related work experience in the management of HIV cases
  • Sound knowledge of Voluntary Social Agencies
  • Knowledge about legislations that safe-guard with the rights of individuals, especially the most vulnerable
  • Training in provider initiated testing and counselling certification
