The Special Care Nursery at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has reopened after undergoing several months of renovation. 

The nursery, also known as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), specialises in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. 

 Established in 1952, the special nursery has been instrumental in the development of neonatal services in the region. 

 Dr Roxanne Melbourne Chambers, Head of Child Health at the University Hospital of the West Indies said the reopening came at a pivotal time when the hospital is seeking to improve its neonatal services. 

 "The services in 2018 really stand on the shoulders of the paediatricians, neonatologist and nurses who dedicated their lives, energy, career and resources to improving neonatal outcomes at this institution,” she said.
