LDS Charities, The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, has donated to the University Hospital of the West Indies, an Iridex Laser 577 patent scanning Micropulse Laser & Slit Lamp and a Scan Optics Ophthalmic Microscope with a teaching video Monitor.   The donation is worth approximately JA$10 million.

The Laser and Microscope are used for treating both glaucoma and retinal diseases, which are on the rise in Jamaica and has a debilitating effect on our working class population. These conditions will result in irreversible blindness if not adequately treated.

The ophthalmic Microscope with its monitor will serve as an effective teaching tool for the UHWI residence, by providing a revolutionary way of viewing eye surgeries on a monitor while it is being performed.

The Iridex Laser 577 Micropulse Laser is a state of the art laser that will significantly reduce eye surgeries by more than 1/5th of the time it normally takes for laser surgeries and makes the surgery more comfortable for patients due to the Micropulse Laser.

An official handing over ceremony was held at the UHWI Eye Clinic on Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
